ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Jeff Purvis continued to rebound from serious injuries suffered Sunday in a two-car crash in the NASCAR Busch Series Stacker 2 200 at Nazareth Speedway.
Purvis, 43, remained in serious but stable condition in the Trauma Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital; but doctors had concluded a battery of tests and removed the Clarksville, Tenn., veteran from a ventilator that had assisted his breathing while he was heavily sedated to facilitate his test program.
Doctors revealed on Tuesday that Purvis also suffered a broken left leg in addition to the previously revealed head and neck injuries.
Purvis suffered a contusion to the left base of his brain and fractures to the first and second vertebrae when his No. 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet was struck broadside in the driver's door and left front fender while it sat immobile by Greg Biffle's No. 60 Grainger Ford after Purvis' car blew its engine and crashed.
The next step for Purvis, a team statement said, will be rehabilitation. Purvis will remain at Lehigh Valley, the hospital where former Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison began his initial recovery from career-ending injuries suffered in 1988 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.; until a rehabilitation facility is selected.
Brewco Motorsports owner Clarence Brewer Jr. said he expected to make an announcement on future plans for the No. 37 team on Wednesday.
The two-car team, which also fields the No. 27 Williams Travel Centers Chevrolet for driver Jamie McMurray, is scheduled to compete in Saturday's Carquest 300 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
